In this intermediate-level course, students read articles in order to expand vocabulary through context and basic comprehension. Students are also introduced to the college library.

Upon completion of this course, the student will:

  1. Use paper and electronic resources to support reading comprehension.
    1. Use an English/English dictionary effectively.
    2. Preview readings.
    3. Provide short answers, orally and in writing, to comprehension questions.
    4. Recognize lists when presented in paragraphs.
  2. Use comprehension strategies to derive meaning and answer questions about readings.
    1. Use personal vocabulary bank to build meaning.
    2. Explain American idioms and phrasal verbs.
    3. Analyze role of connectors and transition words to affect meaning.
    4. Use connectors and transitions to support comprehension.
  3. Analyze the main idea and organization of passages.
    1. Distinguish between topic, main idea, and supporting details.
    2. Draw conclusions and make inferences.
    3. Recognize facts and opinions.
    4. Discuss cause and effect and sequence of events.
  4. Use vocabulary to support and demonstrate comprehension.
    1. Use vocabulary words to write complete sentences.
    2. Explain correct contextual meanings of new vocabulary words with multiple meanings.
    3. Use correct form of words in appropriate situations.
  5. Use library and online resources to locate and utilize information.
    1. Use electronic resources to locate specific facts and additional information.

Evaluation Criteria/Policies

The grade will be determined using the Delaware Tech grading system:

90-100 = A
80-89 = B
70-79 = C
0-69 = F
