  2. Explore the impact of key cultural elements on the healthcare delivery system in the target population. (CCC 5, 6; PGC 2)
  3. Apply the concepts for effective, culturally relevant healthcare to a diverse society.  (CCC 1, 2, 3, 4, 5; PGC 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)

Measurable Performance Objectives (MPOs)

Upon completion of this course, the student will:

  1. Define culture, and provide examples of key cultural elements, language, values, social structure, social institutions, and technology.
    1. Identify and critically analyze current cultural resources (e.g., news events or scholarly journals) specific to healthcare.
    2. Analyze the impact of cultural diversity in the provision of healthcare services.
    3. Delineate the components of a cultural assessment model.
    4. Analyze a culture/subculture.
    5. Identify how various cultural beliefs may impact healthcare.
    6. Explain the importance of cultural and linguistic competence for healthcare providers/healthcare organizations to understand, and respond to the linguistic needs of diverse populations.
    7. Evaluate the importance of communication, including language differences, verbal and non-verbal behaviors, and silence.
    8. Explain how language differences are an obstacle to providing multicultural healthcare.
  2. Explore the impact of key cultural elements on the healthcare delivery system in the target population.
    1. Recognize culturally relevant healthcare decision-making in the target population.
    2. Report observations of verbal and nonverbal communication patterns within the target population.
    3. Relate the concept of technology to healthcare practices in the target population.
  3. Apply the concepts for effective, culturally relevant healthcare to a diverse society.
    1. Analyze the importance of social organization related to healthcare practices.
    2. Use specific strategies to provide culturally competent healthcare.
    3. Self evaluate biases, barriers, and strengths in dealing with diverse populations.
    4. Identify and analyze the history, customs, and beliefs of the host country.
    5. Identify the impact that the international experience has on the ability to deliver culturally competent care.

The grade will be determined using the Delaware Tech grading system:

90-100 = A
80-89 = B
70-79 = C
0-69 = F
