HLH 130 Nurse Assistant Training

Students learn to safely perform basic nursing assistant skills under the supervision of the licensed nurse in a healthcare facility. Communication, observation, and documentation skills are incorporated to aid the student in meeting the psychological, physical, and environmental needs of the patient. Following successful completion of this course, the student is qualified to take the Nurse Aid Competency Examination for certification.

Measurable Performance Objectives (MPOs)

Upon completion of this course, the student will:

  1. Discuss the role, functions, and legal limitations of a nursing assistant as stated by state and federal regulations.
    1. Define the role and functions of the nursing assistant and provider.
    2. Discuss the role of long term care advocates, investigators, and surveyors.
    3. Identify the chain of command in the organizational structure of the healthcare agency.
    4. Demonstrate accountability inherent in the nursing assistant role.
    5. Identify abuse potentials and appropriate reporting of abuse.
    6. Identify safety risks, and demonstrate appropriate safety precautions.
    7. Provide privacy and adheres to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations.
    8. Maintain care and security of patients' personal possessions.
  2. Effectively communicate with residents, family, community, and members of the healthcare team.
    1. Collaborate effectively with members of healthcare team.
    2. Demonstrate appropriate and effective communication skills with healthcare professionals.

    4. Demonstrate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) at the healthcare provider level.

The grade will be determined using the Delaware Tech grading system:

90-100 = A
80-89 = B
70-79 = C
0-69 = F
