Measurable Performance Objectives (MPOs)

Upon completion of this course, the student will:

  1. Perform primary assessments, and manage patients requiring intervention.
    1. Recognize and correct any compromise in the primary assessment.
    2. Perform patient care that addresses deficits noted during the primary assessment using techniques such as maneuvers to open the airway, application of oxygen therapy, bag- valve-mask ventilation, positioning to address suspected shock-state, and external cardiac compressions.
    3. Perform body substance isolation techniques.
  2. Perform secondary assessments based on patient presentation.
    1. Use examination techniques: inspection, palpation, auscultation, and percussion.
    2. Modify approach based on patient severity and/or stability.
    3. Perform an accurate system assessment.
    4. Identify presence and type of adventitious lung sounds.
    5. Accurately assess vital signs: blood pressure, pulse rate, respiratory rate, pulse oximetry, ETCO2, and capnography.
  3. Interpret history and clinical findings, and use clinical reasoning to formulate a field impression as a team leader.
    1. Interpret vital signs to determine patient stability and status of respiration, circulation, and perfusion.
    2. Modify approach based on patient severity and/or stability.
    3. Formulate treatment plans integrating Delaware Standing Orders.
  4. Perform basic and advanced interventions as a team leader and a team member.
    1. Perform wound closure using a technique appropriate for the wound type.
    2. Obtain and interpret 3-lead and 12-lead EKGs.
    3. Insert catheters to establish intravenous access.
    4. Calculate and set flow rate for intravenous infusion.
    5. Perform clinical math calculations to calculate drug dosages.
    6. Prepare and administer medications via various routes: oral, inhalation, sublingual, intravenous, transdermal, intranasal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular.
    7. Prepare and perform advanced airway management techniques.
    8. Determine and perform electrical therapeutic interventions.
  5. Communicate effectively with patients and the clinical team.
    1. Use communication techniques to conduct a patient interview to obtain a medical history, history of present illness, and assess mental status.
    2. Communicate the treatment plan to the clinical team.
    3. Operate a radio to perform a patient report.
    4. Write a patient care report to accurately document a patient contact.
    5. Exhibit a professional affect.

Evaluation Criteria/Policies

The grade will be determined using the Delaware Tech grading system:

90-100 = A
80-89 = B
70-79 = C
0-69 = F

  5. Assess a scene or situation in order to identify threats to operating safely.
  6. Apply communication and ethical decision-making skills required for an entry-level paramedic.

  8. Function effectively as an entry-level paramedic in the pre-hospital working environment in the roles of Team Leader and Team Member.
