Course Description

A continuation of Dental Hygiene Fundamentals I, this course is designed to develop new skills appropriate to dental hygiene treatment. Its focus is on various patient populations, their characteristics, common treatment needs, and patient management in addition to ethical and legal issues of dental hygiene care.

Upon completion of this course, the student will:

  1. Analyze clinical preparation techniques required to provide a safe working environment to protect the dental health team and their patients.
    1. Apply appropriate infection control protocol during all dental hygiene procedures.
    2. Demonstrate the proper operation and maintenance of dental equipment.
  2. Analyze the characteristics associated with various patient populations and their influence on dental hygiene treatment planning, care, and patient management.
    1. Identify the characteristics associated with children, adolescents, adult, and geriatric patients.
    2. Summarize patient management techniques for children, adolescents, adult, and geriatric patients.
    3. Identify characteristics associated with pregnant and menopausal women.
    4. Summarize patient management techniques for pregnant and menopausal women.
    5. Discuss various people management skills, including listening and conflict management.
  3. Apply the principles of accurate documentation of patient care.
    1. Discuss the rationale for accurate documentation.
    2. Prepare the assigned patient documentation exercises using appropriate clinic forms.
    3. Discuss the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
  4. Differentiate among various oral physiotherapy aids and techniques to assist in patient care.

    2. Demonstrate the techniques for obtaining alginate impressions, bite registrations, and pouring and trimming of study models.
    3. Discuss the indications and techniques for fabricating mouthguards/fluoride trays.
    4. Demonstrate the techniques for fabricating mouthguards/fluoride trays.
    5. Discuss the mechanism of action, indications, and contraindications for pit and fissure sealants.
    6. Demonstrate the techniques for application of pit and fissure sealants.
    7. Discuss professional and home care methods for cleaning removable prosthetic appliances.
    8. Demonstrate the technique for professional cleaning of removable prosthetic appliances.
    9. Discuss the principles of instrument sharpening.
    10. Demonstrate the technique for instrument sharpening.
    11. Discuss the principles of powered scaling instruments.
    12. Demonstrate the technique for use of the ultrasonic scaler.
    13. Identify various topical anesthetics and the indications for their use.
    14. Demonstrate the application of various topical anesthetics.
    15. Demonstrate preparation of the appropriate armamentarium for assisting in administration of local anesthesia.
    16. Discuss the principles of dental hypersensitivity.
    17. Demonstrate the procedures for applying desensitizing agents.
    18. Demonstrate the procedure for delivery of an oral irrigant.

Evaluation Criteria/Policies

The grade will be determined using the Delaware Tech grading system:

90-100 = A
80-89 = B
70-79 = C
0-69 = F
