Upon completion of this course, the student will:

    1. Describe and document pertinent information on the medical history form based on appropriate follow-up questions and medical references.
    2. Recognize contraindications and/or the need for modifications to dental hygiene care.
    3. Demonstrate the techniques to determine and record the vital signs of a patient.
    4. Use techniques to perform an extraoral and intraoral examination.
    5. Describe and document clinical findings using appropriate descriptive terminology.
    6. Classify the care level of a patient based on assessment data.
    7. Prepare a dental hygiene treatment plan based on patient needs.
    8. Determine patient’s periodontal health using the periodontal probe and other diagnostic aids.
    9. Chart periodontal findings on an initial and a final periodontal record.
    10. Chart subgingival calculus per discretion of the clinical instructor(s).
    11. Chart caries/restorative findings.
    12. Assess a patient’s oral hygiene through completion of a patient hygiene performance (PHP) index.
    13. Determine the patient’s general and oral health status at subsequent appointments.
    14. Prepare all patient records and clinical forms promptly, accurately, and legibly.
  3. Demonstrate the principles of instrumentation in patient care delivery.
    1. Identify all instruments in the student kit.
    2. Demonstrate the use of examination instruments to assess oral health.
    3. Demonstrate effective removal of dental deposits and stains using scaling instruments for periodontal debridement.
    4. Demonstrate effective periodontal debridement on patients in the patient care level (CL) Class II.
    5. Demonstrate engine polishing techniques.
  4. Demonstrate comprehensive dental hygiene treatment for patients from a full spectrum of patient populations exhibiting varying states of oral health.
    1. Perform a comprehensive clinical competency examination on a partner.
    2. Perform dental hygiene treatment on patients from a full spectrum of populations, including a minimum of one each: child/adolescent, adult, and geriatric.
    3. Demonstrate appropriate clinical management skills.
    4. Perform dental hygiene treatment on patients with varying degrees of difficulty, including care levels Class I and Class II.
    5. Observe the management of a pediatric patient at an assigned location during one clinical session.
    6. Perform patient education for various populations regarding oral physiotherapy and other preventive measures.
    7. Demonstrate the procedures for applying professional topical fluorides.

The grade will be determined using the Delaware Tech grading system:

90-100 = A
80-89 = B
70-79 = C
0-69 = F
