Measurable Performance Objectives (MPOs)

Upon completion of this course, the student will:

  1. Edit writing to achieve accuracy and clarity.
    1. Identify and correct errors in agreement, verb tense, verb form, possessive case, word order, word form, capitalization, punctuation, voice, and parallel structure.
    2. Rewrite sentence fragments and run-on sentences.
    3. Apply editing and proofreading skills to personal writing.
  2. Compose varied sentences that are consistently clear and accurate.
    1. Use a variety of sentence types in writing assignments.
    2. Select and evaluate the effectiveness of connectors and transition words.
    3. Use effective word choice in sentences.
  3. Construct coherent and unified paragraphs and short essays.
    1. Compose an appropriate response to a writing prompt.
    2. Employ writing process strategies from pre-writing through first draft, editing, proofreading, and final draft to complete writing assignments.
    3. Create clear, effective thesis statements supported by relevant and sufficient details.
    4. Show logical progression of ideas with effective transition words.
    5. Employ summarizing, paraphrasing, and quoting strategies effectively.
  4. Demonstrate familiarity with standard cultural expectations in American academic and professional life with regard to submission of written assignments.
    1. Complete and submit assignments on time.
    2. Follow directions regarding the appearance and formatting of final drafts.
    3. Comply with standards regarding plagiarism.

Evaluation Criteria/Policies

The grade will be determined using the Delaware Tech grading system:

90-100 = A
80-89 = B
70-79 = C
0-69 = F
